overheating simulations against current and future weather files
The Brief
To provide design guidance across energy, daylight and sunlight, overheating, embodied carbon, circular economy, and air quality to support a full planning application for 15 new residential units and commercial floor space.
The Solution
Optioneered pathways with the design team to meet the Greater London Authority and Camden Council’s net zero target in operational carbon.
Undertook Dynamic Simulation Modelling (DSM) to assess thermal comfort levels against current and future weather.
Assessed internal daylight and sunlight of the new development and it’s impact on neighbouring properties.
Examined the effect of air quality on future occupants and the impacts associated with the operation and construction of the proposal.
Provided guidance on reducing embodied carbon and maximising circularity.
The Result
An all-electric energy strategy was proposed, incorporating air source heat pumps and solar PV roof tiles to maximise CO2 reductions and minimise air quality impacts.
Overheating risk was mitigated against current and future weather by incorporating louvres and low g-value glazing to south facing glazing to minimise solar gain, maximised window openings, deep window recesses, balconies, and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, all while ensuring sufficient daylight and sunlight access.
