Shade the UK was founded by Andy a few years ago to help raise awareness of the issues of climate change and how it impacts vulnerable people. Since its inception, Shade the UK have been involved in various key stakeholder engagements regarding the UK and London’s strategy for dealing with increased temperatures; including the “Turning Up the Heat” report led by the LSE Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment on the growing threat of heat risk in the UK.

An online event will launch the new report.

The report discusses the impacts of extreme heat on health and wellbeing, the built and natural environment, infrastructure and the economy, and explores gaps in national policy on heat. It provides insights from first responders, local and national government and agencies, utilities and civil society organisations who had direct experience of the 2022 heatwaves in England.

The event will present findings from the report, outline a set of recommendations to enhance the UK’s preparedness to future extreme heat events, and initiate dialogue on next steps for this programme of work.

Keynote speaker: Dr Candice Howarth, Head of Local Climate Action at the LSE Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment

Chair: Dr Radhika Khosla, Associate Professor at the Smith School of Enterprise and Environment and Director of the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Cooling.

Panellists:

Andy Love, Founder of Shade the UK & Love Design Studio

Kathryn Brown, Director of Climate Change and Evidence, Wildlife Trusts
